Ice crystals on ice
When daytime temperatures ranging around 30 degrees are followed by clear cold nights large ice crystals like these will form on the smooth snow-free surfaces of my river’s ice. This happens most often wherever there is an opening in the ice allowing water vapor to rise where it will condense and freeze on twigs, stems, and the ice itself.
